ABSTRACT

Rapid advances in wearable sensing technology have demonstrated unprecedented opportunities for artificial intelligence. In comparison with the traditional hand-held electrolarynx, a wearable and intelligent artificial throat with sound-sensing ability is a more comfortable and versatile method to assist disabled people with communication. Herein, a piezoresistive sensor with a novel configuration is demonstrated, which consists of polystyrene (PS) spheres as microstructures sandwiched between silver nanowires and reduced graphene oxide layers. In fact, changes in the device's conducting patterns are obtained by spay-coating the various weight ratios and sizes of the PS microspheres, which is a fast and convenient way to establish microstructures for improving sensitivity. The wearable artificial throat device also exhibits high sensitivity, fast response time, and ultralow intensity level detection. Moreover, the device's excellent mechanical-electrical performance allows it to detect subtle throat vibrations that can be converted into controllable sounds. In this case, an intelligent artificial throat is achieved by combining a deep learning algorithm with a highly flexible piezoresistive sensor to successfully recognize five different words (help, sick, patient, doctor, and COVID) with an accuracy exceeding 96%. Herein, new opportunities in voice control as well as other human-machine interface applications are opened.

ABSTRACT

Background With the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), nurses have won well-deserved recog-nition for their indispensable roles in providing humane and professional healthcare for patients. However, by the nature of their role working at the forefront of patient care, nurses are prone to experiencing mental health conse-quences. Therefore, we pay attention to measuring the magnitude of psychological symptoms and identifying associ-ated factors among nurses in China.Methods We launched a nationwide, cross-sectional survey of nurses who worked in secondary or tertiary hospitals and public or private hospitals from 30 provinces in China. The prevalence and severity of symptoms of burnout, depression, and anxiety were investigated, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with each psychological symptom.Findings A total of 138 279 respondents who worked in 243 hospitals completed this survey. A substantial propor-tion of nurses reported symptoms of burnout (34%), depression (55.5%), and anxiety (41.8%). In line with the dispro-portionality of economic development, we noted that the middle or western region was an independent risk factor for depression and anxiety. Compared with those working in the secondary hospital, nurses who worked in tertiary hospitals were associated with a higher likelihood of burnout and depression.Interpretation Nurses are experiencing emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion during the COVID-19 epidemic. ABSTRACT

Objective: Ixekizumab is a high-affinity monoclonal antibody that selectively targets interleukin-17A and is approved for treating moderate-to-severe psoriasis. This phase 3, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT03364309;registered December 6, 2017) evaluated the safety and efficacy of ixekizumab in Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Method(s): 438 patients were randomized 2:2:1 to 80 mg ixekizumab every 2 weeks (IXE Q2W, n = 176), 80 mg ixekizumab every 4 weeks (IXE Q4W, n = 174), or placebo (n = 88). Efficacy was assessed by evaluating the static Physician's Global Assessment score of 0 or 1 (sPGA [0,1]) and Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 75/90/100 responses, and nonresponder imputation was used for handling missing data. The safety profile was evaluated by assessing treatment emergent adverse events (AEs) and serious AEs. Result(s): At week 12, the sPGA (0,1) response rates were 3.4%, 79.9%, and 86.4% in the placebo, IXE Q4W, and IXE Q2W groups, respectively. The PASI 75/90/100 response rates were 8.0%/2.3%/0.0%, 87.4%/75.9%/29.3%, and 93.8%/82.4%/33.0% in the placebo, IXE Q4W, and IXE Q2W groups, respectively. Ixekizumab led to rapid PASI 50 responses, as early as week 1, whereas PASI 75 and sPGA (0,1) responses were observed from week 2. sPGA (0,1) and sPGA (0) responses were maintained through week 60 in a higher proportion of patients receiving IXE Q4W vs. placebo. The safety profile was consistent with previous studies of ixekizumab in psoriasis. Conclusion(s): Ixekizumab showed a rapid onset of action and high efficacy that was maintained through 60 weeks and was well tolerated with no unexpected AEs, in Chinese patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. ABSTRACT

Introduction: Diabetes is an independent predictor of poor outcomes in patients with COVID-19. We compared the effects of the preadmission use of antidiabetic medications on the in-hospital mortality of patients with COVID-19 having type 2 diabetes. Methods: A systematic search was performed until November 30, 2021. We used a random-effects meta-analysis to calculate the pooled OR (95% CI). Results: We included 61 studies (3,061,584 individuals). We found some medications protective against COVID-related death, including metformin, GLP-1RA and SGLT-2i. DPP-4i and insulin users were more likely to die during hospitalization. SU, TZD, and AGI were mortality neutral. Metformin use was associated with better outcome in a dose-response manner. Conclusions: Metformin, GLP-1RA, and SGLT-2i were associated with lower mortality rate in patients with COVID-19 having type 2 diabetes. DPP-4i and insulin were linked to increased mortality. We thank Arnbjerg-Nielsen and co-authors for their constructive contribution. We endorse their key comments and suggestions on how to increase awareness of and action on water quality interactions in the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus. Here, we advance the discussion, commenting on the scope of water quality to embrace ecosystem as well as human needs, and the importance of transdisciplinarity and focusing at the city/aquifer/drainage basin scale in WEF nexus hotspots in ensuring that water quality is considered in WEF nexus approaches. We also identify how recent global events, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP 26), may intensify the WEF nexus and its water quality interlinkages, highlighting the need to weave WEF considerations into addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the climate and biodiversity emergencies. © 2022 IAHS.

ABSTRACT

Tremendous efforts have been made to improve diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, but knowledge on long-term complications is limited. In particular, a large portion of survivors has respiratory complications, but currently, experienced radiologists and state-of-the-art artificial intelligence systems are not able to detect many abnormalities from follow-up computerized tomography (CT) scans of COVID-19 survivors. Here we propose Deep-LungParenchyma-Enhancing (DLPE), a computer-aided detection (CAD) method for detecting and quantifying pulmonary parenchyma lesions on chest CT. Through proposing a number of deep-learning-based segmentation models and assembling them in an interpretable manner, DLPE removes irrelevant tissues from the perspective of pulmonary parenchyma, and calculates the scan-level optimal window, which considerably enhances parenchyma lesions relative to the lung window. Aided by DLPE, radiologists discovered novel and interpretable lesions from COVID-19 inpatients and survivors, which were previously invisible under the lung window. Based on DLPE, we removed the scan-level bias of CT scans, and then extracted precise radiomics from such novel lesions. We further demonstrated that these radiomics have strong predictive power for key COVID-19 clinical metrics on an inpatient cohort of 1,193 CT scans and for sequelae on a survivor cohort of 219 CT scans. Our work sheds light on the development of interpretable medical artificial intelligence and showcases how artificial intelligence can discover medical findings that are beyond sight. Respiratory complications after a COVID infection are a growing concern, but follow-up chest CT scans of COVID-19 survivors hardly present any recognizable lesions. A deep learning-based method was developed that calculates a scan-specific optimal window and removes irrelevant tissues such as airways and blood vessels from images with segmentation models, so that subvisual abnormalities in lung scans become visible.

ABSTRACT

During COVID-19 pandemic, people experienced lockdown and associated distress. As face-to-face intervention was unfeasible, an 8-week Strength-based Online Community Intervention (SOCI) was developed and evaluated with a quasi-experimental design in Hubei Province, China from February to April 2020. Participants (N = 150) self-elected to join either the SOCI group or a casual discussion control group. Pre-/post-measures on post-traumatic stress, positive and negative affect, resilience, and spirituality were taken. Multivariate ANOVA revealed a significant combined effect with a medium effect size (partial eta squared = 0.11). Specifically, significant group × time interaction effects were revealed for resilience, spirituality, and positive affect. © 2021 The Author(s). ABSTRACT

Human pathogenic coronaviruses can be divided into seven types, namely HCoV-229E, HCoV-OC43, HCoV-HKUl, HCoV-NL63, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. Among them, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), which are caused by the last three coronaviruses respectively, are enormous threats that challenge human health and social and economic development. Despite the huge investment in drug development for pathogenic coronaviruses, there is no specifically effective anti-coronavirus drug approved so far. In this review we systematically summarize 146 representative anti-coronavirus active compounds reported in the past 20 years and list 26 potential target proteins involved in the process of viral infection and replication. In addition, we predict the target proteins of those active compounds with unclear antiviral activity mechanisms. ABSTRACT

Objective: To understand the identification and medical observation of close contacts of COVID-19 cases in a city and provide scientific basis for the adjustment of the epidemic prevention and control strategies. Methods: Descriptive epidemiological methods were used to analyze the general characteristics of all the close contacts of COVID-19 cases in a city. Throat swabs were collected from the close contacts for real-time fluorescent RT-PCR. The confirmed cases were diagnosed according to diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 (trial version 5). Results: Among the 1 665 close contacts of COVID-19 cases in a city, 10 were diagnosed as COVID-19 cases during the medical observation period, accounting for 30.30% of all the confirmed cases in a city, most of them were close relatives of the confirmed cases. The longest contact time with the confirmed cases was 8 days and the shortest was 0 days. Ten COVID-19 cases in close contacts constituted to six family clusters. Conclusions: In COVID-19 prevention and control in a city, the active tracking of the transmission chains of the confirmed cases and timely identification of the close contacts were conducted. The people who had close contacts with the confirmed COVID-19 cases within 14 days before onset were all placed under medical observation, which played a key role in the effective prevention and control of COVID-19 epidemic in a city. Nearly one third of COVID-19 cases occurred during the medical observation period, so the infection sources were effectively controlled and transmission routes were effectively blocked, which greatly facilitated the prevention of the clusters of COVID-19 cases.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This paper presents a newborn (G2P2, gestational age of 39+6 weeks, birth weight of 3,200 g, with normal fetal amniotic fluid) with suspected coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) admitted to our hospital on February 10, 2020, at the birth age of 16 hours and 34 minutes. The Apgar scores at 1 and 5 min were 9 and 10 points, respectively. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The mother of the newborn was exposed to a patient with COVID-19 five days before delivery. The newborn had nausea and vomiting after birth, with feeding intolerance, and full enteral feeding was given on the 6th day after birth. The newborn was in good general condition during the period of hospitalization. RESULTS: The two 2019-nCoV nucleic acid tests of the newborn were negative on the 5th and 7th days after birth. On the 1st and 8th days after birth, typical pulmonary lesions were detected in the newborn by chest CT. Our study supports that chest imaging examination should be actively performed in the newborn even with a negative 2019-nCoV nucleic acid test in cases where a pregnant woman is exposed to a patient with COVID-19 or is confirmed with 2019-nCoV infection. CONCLUSIONS: For newborns with typical pulmonary lesions, strict quarantine measures are suggested if the possibility of COVID-19 cannot be excluded.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To investigate the clinical features and outcome of treatment for novel coronavirus pneumonia. Methods: Literature on novel coronavirus pneumonia was retrieved from PubMed and EMBASE databases. The relevant data was extracted and a meta-analysis was performed using StatsDirect statistical software V.2.8.0 to calculate the combined odds ratio. Results: Seven studies were included, consisting of 1594 cases. The meta-analysis result showed that the most common clinical symptoms of the novel coronavirus pneumonia were fever (91.6%) and cough (64.5%), followed by dyspnea (32.8%) and sputum (28.1%). Headache (10.5%), sore throat (11.2%), hemoptysis (3.2%), diarrhea (6.6%) and the other symptoms were relatively rare. Aspartate aminotransferase (29%), alanine transaminase (22.7%), and total bilirubin (11.7%) levels were elevated, except for serum albumin levels (80.4%). The common therapeutic agents used were antibiotics (87.7%), antiviral drugs (75.5%), and glucocorticoids (26.6%), while antifungal agents (7.7%) were used in few. Mechanical ventilation (13.4%), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (1.9%), and continuous renal replacement therapy (3.8%) were used in severe cases. The rate of mortality in hospital was 7.7%, respectively. Heterogeneity between studies was significant; however, subgroup and sensitivity analysis had failed to identify clear sources of heterogeneity. Conclusion: Fever, cough and liver dysfunction are the main clinical manifestations of this disease and the mortality rate is low.
